The San Francisco Chapter of WNBA brings together members with diverse backgrounds in the literary world to exchange ideas and resources. Founded in 1968 by Effie Lee Morris, then coordinator of Children’s Services for the San Francisco Main Public Library, membership has ranged from sixty to over one hundred. Our members are writers, booksellers, agents, editors, publishers, publicists, librarians, graphic designers, web designers, social media experts, career coaches, literacy specialists, marketing specialists, conference planners, aspiring authors, and avid readers. Our vision is to support women in the world of words, promote literacy, a love of reading, and collaborate effectively within the literary community of the San Francisco Bay Area.

WNBA-SF major events include:

Meetings/Mixers: featuring a speaker and a social, at least quarterly.

Sponsorship: San Francisco Writing for Change Conference and San Francisco Writers Conference

National Reading Group Month: Bookstore event in collaboration with Litquake, and Books, Inc. Opera Plaza

Holiday Party (a perk for members only) at the home of agents Michael Larsen and Elizabeth Pomada, early members of SF Chapter

Pitch-O-Rama: Meet the Agents & Editors (fundraiser)

Sponsorship: Northern California Book Awards

Sponsorship: Effie Lee Morris Lecture

SF Chapter maintains an ongoing literacy partnership with the Living Room, a day center that serves homeless women and their children in Santa Rosa, CA. Our chapter activities there include: fall book drive, soliciting grants, visiting the center each week to read aloud and give away books, collaborating with local literacy partners, such as the Free Book Mobile.
