2007 WNBA Eastman Grant

The Eastman Grant committee is pleased to announce that Hana Kim is the recipient of the 2007 WNBA Eastman Grant. Ms. Kim is Korea Studies Librarian in the East Asian Library at the University of Toronto, Canada. She wrote, "My mother owns a small publishing company in South Korea. Therefore, I was exposed early to the Korean publishing industry by assisting her occasionally. This experience developed my passion for books and influenced my career choice as a librarian."

When Ms. Kim was notified, she said, "It is great honour to receive this grant." She has enrolled in a course titled "Publishing Overview: Trade" at Ryerson University in Toronto. This course examines many aspects of the publishing industry including children's and mass-market books. Specific topics include publisher-author relations; subsidiary rights and co-publishing; administration, editorial, design, production, and marketing.

Kim says this course will enable her to become a resource on book publishing within her library. She also plans to provide workshops to library patrons on how to get their work published. "Most particularly, I would like to focus on how to select a publisher as well as the relationship between authors and publishers; for example, contracts, royalties, rights, and creative input. I am also interested in book design and copyright issues."

We wish her well and look forward to hearing from her when she has completed her course work.

Purpose

The purposes of WNBA are educational and charitable. WNBA came into being to inform book women about matters relevant to themselves and the book world so that these women could inform and help one another.

That's what we still do, through actions such as these:
